Time will tell. Like the phrase, this collection showcases the ultimate test of time as each structure has stood remarkably, for hundreds or thousands of years. This collection of paintings was inspired by the “Seven Wonders of The World” and newly discovered ancient structures. Most of these places have stayed hidden for hundreds of years before being uncovered, and are surprising, unknown discoveries such as The Pyramid of the Sun in Bosnia. Recently discovered, the ancient pyramid was built by the Illyrian people who inhabited the Balkan Peninsula, dating the pyramid to almost 30,000 years ago and is twice as big as the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. The second painting of the Rose City in Petra was carved in sandstone over 2,000 years ago in the high desert of Jordan. The last painting of Machu Picchu in Peru is another exceptionally unique place originally built approximately 500 years ago by the Incas as a site for their nobles and emperors.
This collection focuses on historic, rare and breathtaking places that reflect the theme of extraordinary unknown wonders. Each painting displays elements and principles of design including emphasis, contrast, shape, monochromatic and complementary colour used to enhance important features. Furthermore, the places represented in each painting were carefully considered and chosen due to the distinct history behind each place and the remarkable effort with which they were built, considering the isolated locations and difficult conditions these structures were constructed as well as the time period. When gazing upon these places one can’t help but admire how such incredible, fascinating unknown wonders of this world came to be.
With each painting in this collection I strived to capture the detail, history and unique individuality each place held. The process of creating this series has taught many valuable lessons and created opportunities for experience and learning from mistakes. Taking risks is an important part of growing as an artist and challenging yourself. With each piece of artwork I aspire to improve, and experiment, whether its techniques, mediums or styles as I look forward to learning and creating meaningful art.
